Delhi’s IGI airport ranked the 12th busiest airport in the world

New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has now become the world's 12th busiest airport, moving up four places from the 16th spot in 2017. According to the preliminary world airport traffic rankings for 2018 released by the Airports Council International (ACI) , it over took mega-hubs like Frankfurt, Dallas Forth Worth, Guangzhou and Istanbul Ataturk airports. The four airports above the IGI Airport are Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Shanghai Pudong and Hong Kong, managing over 4.6 million passengers more than IGIA.

"India became the world's third-largest aviation market in terms of passenger throughput, behind the US and China, in 2018. India's move towards a more liberalised aviation market and the nation's strengthening economic fundamentals have helped it become one of the fastest-growing markets with its traffic growing rapidly in a relatively short time," read a statement by ACI.

Vistara gets approval to fly on international routes

Vistara, a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Ltd, can now fly to international destinations, the secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.

In June, the airline met the requirement of owning a fleet of more than 20 jets, needed to fly internationally, and hoped to launch international services last year. However, it did not have the necessary regulatory approvals. The approval will make Vistara the fifth carrier from India to fly on international routes.

Following the approval, Vistara has sought permission to operate flights between Delhi and Colombo seven days a week. Vistara, which started operations in January 2015, now serves 24 destinations with over 730 flights a week with a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 aircraft.

Indian airlines are turning to the international market for better returns at a time when aviation consultancy CAPA India estimates the sector will post a collective loss of USD 1.7 billion for the financial year ending March 31.

Indigo to launch flights to new international routes

Launching its flight on the Delhi-Istanbul sector, IndiGo has announced plans to use its expanding fleet of A320neo and A321neo aircraft to connect more Indian cities to China, Vietnam, England, Myanmar and Saudi Arabia.

William Boulter, chief commercial officer (CCO), IndiGo said, “We are looking very seriously into other points in South East Asia, notably the obvious ones of Vietnam and Myanmar. We also want to operate shortly to Saudi Arabia on the west side. We are seriously interested in getting in China as soon as we can. We are still selecting precise destinations.”

In 2019-2020, IndiGo’s capacity on international routes would rise from 15 pc to 20 pc of total capacity. The airline plans to add 125 A321neo aircraft in its fleet over number of years. In 2019, it will receive 20-25 of these aircraft from Airbus, he said.
