Sri Lanka Tourism introduces special packages for Indian tourists

In an effort to attract Indian outbound tourists visiting Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Tourism in collaboration with SriLankan Airlines, The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) and inbound tour operators has introduced special packages targeting India, to revive the industry. The package offers discounted airfare, accommodation, transport and more, ranging from 30 pc to 60 pc.

Chamari Rodrigo, consul general attended the event along with John Amaratunga, minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs who headed the Sri Lankan delegation and spoke of the restored security environment in Sri Lanka.

The five tour packages to Sri Lanka range from a combination of stays in Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Sigiriya and South Coast with multiple budget-friendly options and will be valid from June 10-September 30, 2019.

Kishu Gomes, chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau described the brand and marketing communication strategy aimed at reviving the industry as well as the growth trajectory that Sri Lanka Tourism recorded.

“India has been the number one source market to Sri Lanka over the past decade and in 2018 recorded over 400,000 visitors to the island. The national carrier SriLankan Airlines operates 123 weekly flights from key Indian cities and we believe such offers are quick to popularise across Indian cities,” said Dimuthu Tennakoon, head of Worldwide Sales and Distribution (HWSD) of Sri Lankan Airlines.

Maldives promotes "Journey to the Sunny Side" campaign with roadshows in India

The Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) completed its 2019 roadshow in India to present its marketing campaign "Journey to the Sunny Side". The roadshow was held in Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi and Chandigarh from June 24- 28, 2019. About 25 travel professionals from Maldives were present. The Maldives delegation was led by deputy managing director of MMPRC, Aishath Neesha Mohamed Shahid. India remains a key market for Maldives and witnessed a nine percent growth in 2018 compared to the previous year. In terms of arrivals to the Maldives, India holds a market share of 8.8 pc till May 2019.

THAI Airways and THAI Smile organise joint product presentation in Kolkata

THAI Airways and THAI Smile Airways, a subsidiary of Thai Airways International celebrated its 59th Anniversary and organised a joint product presentation in Kolkata on June 28 to promote new offers, new experiences, new fares and new destinations of operation of the airlines. To mark this occasion they introduced new services while expanding new routes keeping in mind the Kolkata market as one of its major hub. More than 15 destinations from Kolkata via Bangkok at a very low cost including Hong Kong , Singapore, Sendai two ways journey is introduced under this new campaign, which will be valid till September 27. These two way tickets have a minimum of 2-3 days stay and maximum up to one month.

The Kolkata-Bangkok route also provides many new services as a part of their new campaign. The services include two classes- Smile Class (economy) and Smile Plus (premium economy) with in- flight hot meal to be served to the passengers with alcohol and beverages. Competing with the parallel airlines in the same sector, many new add-ons have been introduced such as free baggage allowances up to 40 kilogram, e- visa, visa-on arrival, lounge facilities, spa and relaxation centre, on board WIFI.

The Thai Smile airline is currently operating from six cities in India namely, Kolkata, Gaya, Varanasi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow. The presentation was attended by tour operators, industry stakeholders, media delegates and guest of honour, consul general of Royal Thai Consulate General, Kolkata, Sweeya Santipitaks.

Enjoy summer in Taiwan with Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific is now offering deals to Taiwan for travel from July 1-September 30, 2019. It includes great return fares (inclusive of taxes) like INR 36,500 from Hyderabad; INR 30,222 from Kolkata; and INR 36,600 from New Delhi.

The Sand Sculpture Art Festival will bring together sand sculptures designed by 25 artists around the theme “Crossing the Town to Find Atlantis” and have a night sand sculpture tour. The event runs till August 25.

American Airlines announces new Jamaica service

American Airlines continues to strengthen its presence in Jamaica with the launch of new service between Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ) and John F Kennedy International Airport in New York (JFK). Starting on Thursday, November 21, the new route will be operated daily with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

With India having no direct flights to Jamaica, this introduction of new flights may prove to be helpful for them too. Indians travelling to Jamaica need to make several flight changes which take a lot of time. These new daily flights would mean that people can take a flight to New York and then get the daily four-hour flight to Montego Bay at 7 am. The flight will depart from MBJ airport at 12 pm daily.

"American's rich history in Jamaica spans more than four decades and today includes an operation of up to 15 daily flights to Montego Bay and Kingston as well as a team of almost 100 people," said Alfredo Gonzalez, American's managing director for the Caribbean. "We look forward to the launch of our new Montego Bay service this coming November, further strengthening Jamaica as a tourist destination by providing nonstop access to the extensive network that we operate out of JFK, which includes up to 111 daily flights to nearly 40 destinations around the world."

Qatar Airways and Emirates launch two new flights connecting India and Portugal

Qatar Airways and Emirates recently announced their launch of year round services between Portugal and India. Qatar Airways will start its new route from its global network from Doha to the capital of Portugal – Lisbon. The service began from June 24, 2019 and will be seven times weekly service in summer 2019 and five times weekly service in winter 2019-20 between Doha and Lisbon.

Porto will become Emirates’ second destination in Portugal after its capital, Lisbon, which the airline currently serves with two flights a day. There will be four times weekly services by Emirates between Dubai and Porto which will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from July 2, 2019.

NYC & Company announces promotional partnership with Sony Pictures on Spider-man

NYC & Company, New York City’s official destination marketing organisation, announced a promotional partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment on the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home. In 2018, NYC welcomed about 13.3 million family visitors, a nearly 6 pc increase over 2017.

“We’re excited to partner with Spider-Man: Far From Home—starring a hometown hero and Queens native—to highlight all there is to do for families when visiting NYC,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company. “Adored by travellers of all ages, Spider-Man is an exceptional representative for the never-ending excitement found across the five boroughs.”

Smithsonian’s Space Museum celebrates 50th anniversary of first moon landing

The National Air and Space Museum announced details for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The museum’s five-day celebration in Washington DC will include the “Apollo 50 Festival” on the National Mall from July 18¬–20. Anniversary events will culminate on July 20 with a late-night event at the museum to celebrate the exact time the first steps occurred.

On July 16, Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 spacesuit will go on display on a state-of-the-art display case with a digital simulation to allow visitors to learn about key mission milestones through visualisations. July 17 will see the museum screening “Ready Jet Go!”an animated space-themed PBS KIDS series along with live music performances, games and a meet and greet session. On July 18, the museum is partnering with NASA to host “Apollo 50 Festival” with exhibits, activities, panel discussions and live performances.

On July 19 the museum will present “Discover the Moon Day!” an educational and fun family activity where visitors can interact with museum scientists to learn about lunar exploration. July 20, the last day of the celebration will see a late-night celebration “The Eagle Has Landed” with astronaut costume designing, trivia and scavenger hunts, science demonstrations, stargazing and Apollo 11-themed musical performance.
