Destination DC hosts sales and media mission in India

Destination DC (DDC), the official destination marketing organization for Washington, DC, conducted a sales and media mission in India to promote the new tourism developments and unique offerings of the District in partnership with the Capital Region USA (CRUSA) and Washington Dulles International Airport. The delegation visited Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi, connecting with over 300 travel partners.

“With a 32 pc increase in visitation, India has proven to be one of our most successful growth markets, ranking fourth globally. We see immense potential among Indian travellers. Through this roadshow, we aim to establish strong partnerships and continue to market not only the key attractions in the city, but also its dynamic neighbourhoods that reflect the ‘DC Cool’ brand,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO of Destination DC. “Our recently added dedicated representation led by Indiva Marketing reinforces our commitment to reach additional Indian travellers.”

The National Cherry Blossom Festival (held from March 20 – April 14) was the theme of the sales mission. More than 1.5 million visitors descend upon Washington, DC every year to admire the 3,000 cherry blossom trees in full bloom. The festival celebrates 107 years of enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.

Riu Plaza hotels to open in London, Toronto and New York

RIU Hotels & Resorts has important projects in store in its Riu Plaza urban hotel line for upcoming years. In 2020, RIU will open its first hotel in London after a total refurbishment of the building, located in the city center, next to Victoria Station. In 2021, a brand new Riu Plaza hotel in the financial district of Toronto will finish its construction phase and will be set to open as RIU´s first property in Canada. In the same year, RIU’s second hotel in New York - Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square, now under construction, will also be inaugurated.

Riu Plaza Hotels are ideal both for leisure and business trips, located very close to the places of cultural and tourist interest and very well-connected, with modern and comfortable rooms and common areas, and conference rooms equipped with the best technology to make the events a success. By the middle of 2019, RIU will have seven Riu Plaza hotels worldwide. The international RIU chain, founded in Mallorca by the Riu family in 1953, has 93 hotels in 19 countries. The company specializes in holiday resorts and over 70 pc of its establishments offer its acclaimed All Inclusive by RIU service. Sakura Matsuri festival at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s cherry blossom festival, Sakura Matsuri, one of the most anticipated spring events in New York City, returns on April 27-28, 2019. The weekend long festival celebrates Japanese culture with a rich programme of events. The festival is the highlight of the garden’s mesmerizing hanami (“cherry blossom viewing”) season.

Based on the Japanese tradition of appreciating the beauty and fleeting nature of cherry blossoms, hanami at Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) draws New Yorkers and visitors from around the world each spring to view the Garden’s collection of over 200 flowering cherry trees making it one of the most spectacular cherry blossom displays in North America.

Programming for Sakura Matsuri will be presented throughout the garden, with music and dance performances on stages on Cherry Esplanade and in the newly reopened Plant Family Collection. Tea ceremonies, art demonstrations, activities for kids, and shopping and dining areas will be featured in pop-ups across the garden, giving visitors the chance to explore new parts of BBG.

Anaheim visitors spent USD 9 billion throughout Orange County in 2018, says reports

Visit Anaheim, announced its sixth consecutive record-breaking year for both spending and visitation in 2018. According to preliminary reports, the landmark year welcomed 24.4 million visitors to the Southern California city and visitor spend topped the charts at USD 9 billion across Orange County. Visitor expenditures cascades across a variety of sectors including lodging, meals and beverages, amusement, shopping and local ground transportation.

“Anaheim is proud to serve as the epicentre for tourism in Orange County which delivers positive economic benefits for every corner of the county,” said Jay Burress, president & CEO, Visit Anaheim. “Tourism is an incredibly competitive landscape. The fact that 2018 heralded in another milestone year underscores the successes of destination development projects that have kept Anaheim attractive to visitors and meeting planners. All of these enhancements will continue to prove beneficial and positively impact our neighbourhoods and region for years to come.”

Since 2016, approximately USD 4.5 billion in destination development investment projects has surged across the city. Theme park enhancements offer unrivalled guest experiences while Anaheim’s hotel portfolio continues to expand, as 1,555 hotel rooms were added to the greater Anaheim Resort district in 2016 and 2017.

“The future is bright for Anaheim. With the opening of Disneyland Park’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land slated for this summer, AAA Four Diamond luxury properties set to open within a year and many more development projects in the works, we anticipate Anaheim tourism to positively contribute to the economic vitality of the region for a long time to come,” says Burress.
